The Man Behind The Jimmy Choo Fragrances

HOME

Glamorous, sensual and feminine, the fashionable modern woman is the inspiration behind luxury fashion house Jimmy Choo's shoes, accessories, and now, perfumes. But you can't talk about the Jimmy Choo woman and her perfume without also addressing the man behind them - in this case, perfumer Olivier Polge, the creator of the brand's two sumptuous fragrances.

Born the son of legendary Chanel perfumer Jacque Polge in Grasse, France, Olivier has developed scents for some of the biggest names in fashion: Victor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb, Burberry’s The Beat and Dior Homme all stand as proof of his prodigious talent, among numerous others. He was also awarded the prestigious French Prix International du Parfum (or International Perfume Award) in 2009 for his achievements in perfumery.

Olivier is a man who truly appreciates the tangible aspects of his trade. His first olfactory memories are as prosaic as yours and mine might be - a chest of drawers covered with samples in the entrance at home; the smell of damp stones in the stairway at his grandparents' house. He also remembers arriving at the International Flavours and Fragrances laboratory for perfumery training and experiencing, for the first time, the physicality of the fragrance production process: "I realised that it was a real trade, almost a manual one. I could see the concrete side to it, sticky sandalwood, powdered coumarin..."

But equally, perfume, for him, is an art. "Less codified, more instinctive," he says. "I can’t imagine it as a continuation of nature but more of a sophisticated version." It is this approach - more about feel than formula - that he turned to in his creation of Jimmy Choo's fragrances. “When you say Jimmy Choo, you immediately picture a glamorous woman. She is chic and sexy, exuberant and refined, intriguing and captivating. In her trail, her fragrance must say it all!”

Available both as an eau de parfum - a fruity chypre with notes of pear, tiger orchid, toffee and Indonesian patchouli - and as an eau de toilette - floral with notes of ginger, tea rose and exotic tiger orchid - each fragrance comes in an exquisite jewel-like bottle inspired by the opulence of handcrafted Italian Murano glass. With its delicate, reflective facets, this is one bottle you'll want to keep on your vanity long after its precious contents are all gone.

Gorgeous packaging aside, the perfumes themselves are every bit as bewitching as the decadent footwear the house is so well known for. And like that favourite pair of Jimmy Choo heels, each a scent you'll definitely want to wear wherever you go.
